In order to gain a more comprehensive insight into the course offerings of our research unit, you will find an overview of our course offerings from past semesters here.
Each semester, students write final theses at the research unit Ancient History – both in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The topics of these papers reflect the breadth of the entire subject: In terms of time, the focus ranges from the Greek Archaic period to late antiquity. Occasionally, final theses with a decidedly reception-historical orientation are also produced.
If you are also interested in writing a final thesis in Ancient History, the following instructions will help you:
Bachelor’s theses usually arise from the context of a specific course offering, e.g. a seminar. Often the interest for a certain general topic is awakened here, which is then deepened within the framework of the final thesis. We therefore advise you to contact the responsible teacher directly, e.g. the head of your seminar. You can find the respective contact details in our team overview and on the personal profile pages.
Master’s theses are usually preceded by a longer engagement with a specific complex of problems. It is recommended to contact people with similar research interests in preparation. You can find out about the respective research interests of the team members on the personal profile pages. The advanced and graduate seminars regularly offered at the research unit also offer support in finding a topic. In principle, such course offerings can also be attended extracurricularly.
Writing a doctoral dissertation means engaging with a research topic for a long time, intensively and intellectually independently. In most cases, the initial interest grows out of a previous master’s thesis and takes up open questions or meta-problems. In other cases, research fields are opened up by calls for proposals or other external impulses. Either way, we advise you to contact our team of lecturers, especially the professors for Ancient History and Cultural History of Antiquity, to find out about the possibilities of a doctoral program in Ancient History. In addition, it is recommended to consult the regulations and procedures governing the doctorate of the faculty 07 at an early stage.
A large number of people with different, multifaceted focuses in research and teaching are gathered at our research units. Accordingly, you will find competent contact persons for a large number of topics, regions and internal periods of the Greco-Roman world. It is best to take a look at the overview page and the personal homepages. Thank you very much for your interest!
